Public Safety Dispatcher

The Public Safety Dispatcher answers 911 calls, operate telephone, radio, and other communication systems to receive and communicate requests for emergency assistance; take information from the public and other sources regarding medical emergencies, fires, crimes, threats, disturbances, acts of violence, accidents, and other public safety matters; coordinate and provide information to law enforcement and emergency response personnel; access sensitive databases and other information sources as needed; provide additional instructions to callers based on knowledge of law enforcement, fire, or emergency medical procedures. Answer non-emergency calls for assistance. Enter, update, and retrieve information from different computer systems relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registrations, stolen vehicles, and other information. Monitor several public safety radio frequencies. Must be able to handle several tasks simultaneously with speed and accuracy; be able to type at a speed necessary for job performance, use good grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Perform jail checks, search detainees, and monitor the jail when there is no other jail staff on duty. Operate jail door controls when no jail controller is on duty. Perform other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate for this position possesses the ability to problem solve, exercise independent judgement in handling emergency calls and complex or unusual situations; value serving people, integrity, responsibility, and teamwork.

The usual shifts for this position is 6 day on, 3 day off rotation with the first 3 days on 1st shift, then 3 days on 2nd shift. Shifts are 8 hours. Requires the ability to flex to other shifts or days as needed to fill time off.

Employment Qualifications

·         Must be 18 years old, a high school graduate with a diploma, or possesses an equivalency certificate which meets the minimum score required by the State of Iowa as determined by the Department of Public Instruction;

·         Must not have been convicted of or received a deferred judgment for any criminal offense other than a minor traffic violation

·         Must not use illegal substances or abuse alcohol

·         Must be able to work 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts, holidays, and weekends.

 Within the first six months of employment

·         Be certified in the IOWA/NCIC Computer System

·         Be certified in Emergency Medical Dispatch and Telecommunicator CPR

·         Complete accredited First Aid and CPR courses

 Within the first year of employment

·         Successfully completed the 40-hour basic telecommunicator course

·         Successfully complete the 40-hour basic jail instruction course
