Update on Secondary Roads Properties
A new 3.5 acre property on Highway 69 north of Forest City is the future home of the Secondary Road Department's Forest City operations. A new 150' x 60' building will replace the in-town facilities and gravel pit 5 miles west of Forest City. Completion of the project is scheduled for fall of 2025.
Once the new building is complete, the in-town properties and gravel pit will be sold at online auction, likely in the fall of 2025. The in-town properties include two 4-bay heated shops, a 4-stall garage, a dome salt shed, and a open front pole shed. Sunnyside Gravel Pit is a 79 acre tract 5 miles west of Forest City, and is being mined for remaining gravel.
Every day recently, about 2,500 tons of gravel are removed from the ground, processed, and blended with coarse limestone to make road surfacing material. For every 2,500 tons of gravel found, the County will save about $25,000 compared to trucking crushed limestone from the quarry in Fertile. The finished pile is expected to be about 70,000 tons.
